Inscription.  Patrick Shannon was a steamboat captain that ran from boats from Matamoros to the mouth of the Rio Grande. He was also an operator of a ferry service and owner of a lumberyard and warehouse. "Shannondale" was his attempt to establish a town opposite Matamoros after the War with Mexico.
