1. What is an SSP? Marker
Inscription.
SSP stands for "Species Survival Plan". In 1981 the AZA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums) started the SSP program in an effort to address the dwindling captive populations of some species. AZA zoos and aquariums work cooperatively to breed and share animals that are part of an SSP. We sometimes compare an SSP to computer dating for zoo and aquarium animals! The goal is to maintain genetically diverse populations and ensure the survival of the species.

Here at RWPZ, we house many SSP animals, including those pictured to the left. Look for the SSP logo on exhibit signage around the zoo!

It's a matter of habitat. It's a matter of balance.
Conservation matters.
