There are now over 40 facilities nationwide that continue to support the captive breeding of red wolves, including Roger Williams Park Zoo. Additionally, wolves have been successfully reintroduced to the wild and are establishing territory along the coast of North Carolina.
Back from the Brink: Red Wolf Population Timeline
1960: Red wolf population is decimated by loss of habitat, predator-control programs, and mixed-breeding with coyotes.
1967: The red wolf is officially declared an endangered species.
1973: The remaining red wolves are removed from the wild and a captive breeding program begins in efforts to save the species. Only 17 pure red wolves are found, 14 of which can be bred. These are the founders of all wild and captive red wolves in the United States today.
1977: The first litter of captive red wolf pups is born at Port Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Seattle, WA.
1980: Red wolves are declared extinct in the wild.
1987: Four red wolves are reintroduced to the wild at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (ARNWR) in Manteo, NC.
2002: The entire population of red wolves living in ARNWR is wild-born.
2005: Three red wolf pups are born at Roger Williams Park Zoo.
2010: Roughly 100 wild red wolves roam eastern North Carolina; an additional 150 wolves exist in captive facilities nationwide, including the ones you see here today.
