7-year-old Addie interviews farmer Eli of Little Rhody Farms in Foster:

Why did you get into egg farming?

My father came to the United States from Poland when rural land was affordable. He bought some land and started a chicken farm. I never expected to run the business - I was working in New York, but then came home to help my father.

How big is your farm?
We have 45,000 chickens who lay one brown egg six out of seven days. That ends up being about 14 million eggs every year!

Is it true that "Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh?"
I actually helped with that ad campaign! At the time, white eggs were seen to be more desirable. We wanted to let people know that the locally-produced brown eggs were fresh and delicious.

When do you work?
I work seven days a week. I feel like I need to be the one to check on the chickens in the morning and evening. It's too big of a responsibility to pass on to anyone else; as a result, I have had only two days off in the last three years. It's a family business and a labor of love.

If you could tell Rhode Islanders one thing about farming, what would it be?
