Inscription.

The thousands of footsteps that cross this area each year take their toll on plant life. People compact the soil so much that eventually plant roots can no longer probe through it, and the plants die.

In 1982, the Bureau of State Parks decided to control the footsteps so that some plants could live. Landscaping was used to define footpaths. Shrubs and wildflowers were planted to beautify the approach to the overlooks.

Please help preserve the scenery by staying on the paths.

Regarding Planting for People. Although the marker has limited historical information, the work going on in the state park at the time the photos were taken demonstrates that it remains a challenge to balance environmental needs with visitor enjoyment.
