Brigadier General Frederick West Lander
"Bravest of the Brave"
Born in Salem, Massachusetts on December 17, 1821
An accomplished Soldier, Poet, Explorer, and Engineer who surveyed and completed the famed Lander Trail and scouted the central route for the Union Pacific Railroad across the West.
Promoted to Brig. Gen. for his courage leading the Battle of Philippi, the first organized land battle of the Civil War.
He died March 2, 1862 at Camp Chase, VA of wounds received in the battle of Edwards Ferry.
Erected 2021 by Salem Veterans Council.
