Cynthia Rarey Dyas
1955-2005
— Cancer activist, community volunteer —
When Cindy Dyas was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 1971, she sought out aggressive therapy, hopeful that the treatments would result in a cure. In 1992, she was active in bringing the Susan G. Komen race for the cure to Columbus. As of 2010, with the work of thousands of volunteers, the race has raised over $14 million to support breast cancer research in Ohio. Cindy served on the race board and chaired various committees. In 2005, the Komen Foundation established the Cindy Dyas award of heroism, which is presented annually to a longterm breast cancer survivor whose courage and resolve to fight this disease has advanced the search for a cure and given strength to others.
Cindy's community service included membership in the Pleasure Build of Children's Hospital and charter membership on the Buckeye Ranch sustaining board VIII. She was honored as an Upper Arlington Rotary woman of the year in 1994.
Cindy was a life long resident of Upper Arlington and a 1977 graduate of Ohio State University. As a member of Upper Arlington Lutheran Church she realized God's mercy and grace, which was lived out in her care for others. Cindy was a loving wife and mother to three beautiful daughters.
