Sullivan's Island in Charleston County, South Carolina — The American South (South Atlantic)
Why is it Black?
Two problems plagued the artillerymen of Battery Jasper from the time of its construction: water seepage and the glare of sunlight off the white concrete surfaces. As a result, the battery received a coat of black asphalt paint in 1904.
Ventilator shafts, some of which can be seen at the foot of the stairs, provided air passages through the battery which helped to minimize the condensation of moisture on interior walls.
Erected by National PArk Service / United States Department of the Interior.
