1. Transportation and Commerce Marker
Inscription. In October. 1821, steamboat Harriett arrived at city wharf, introducing a new method of transporting goods as Montgomery became increasingly important market center for region. Until early years of 20th century Steamboats continued to ply river. In late 1830s building of railroad to Georgia began but not until 1851 was linkage made. With over 44 daily passenger trains serving city in 1890s. L and N Railroad built Union Station and the National Historic Landmark Train Shed. Commerce Street developed as wholesale district. Restored warehouses are now offices, and in 1980s municipal government adapted grain elevators for Amtrak station. (TO THE EAST)
