Inscription.  

El Dr. Betances, inició, con algunos amigos en 1858, en el atrio de la iglesia de Mayagüez, libertar los domingos, niños esclavos en la pila bautismal, cuando costaban 25 pesos. Después de cristianizados valían 50 pesos. En 1867 el Dr. Betances fue el alma mater del grito de Lares, que trajo grandes reformas para esta Antilla.
Año 1926.

El pueblo dominicano ofrenda esta lápida al Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances, por su adhesión activa a la independencia de la Republica Dominicana. Ella le invistió con su representación diplomática, lo ha reconocido siempre como el primero en la legion trinitaria de la union antillana como prócer de ese ideal. Fue por antonomasia el Antillano.

El pueblo cubano ofrenda esta lapida de mármol al insigne varón Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances, que en los tiempos amargos en que se luchaba en las maniguas por obtener la independencia y la soberanía, el fue nuestro representante oficial en la capital de Francia. Homenaje al defensor de la confederación antillana.

los negros, y decidido liberador de la servidumbre colonial de los blancos. Nació en Cabo Rojo, en abril de 1827 y falleció en Paris en sept. de 1898 el pueblo puertorriqueño dedica este monumento a su veneranda memoria, por suscripción popular año de 1926.

English translation:
In 1858, in the atrium of the Mayagüez church, Dr. Betances began to liberate slave children in the baptismal font on Sundays, when they cost 25 pesos. After being Christianized they were worth 50 pesos. Beginning in 1867 Dr. Betances brought great reforms to this island.

The Dominican people offer this stone to Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances, for his active advocacy for the independence of the Dominican Republic. The Republic appreciated him for his diplomatic representation. The Republic has always recognized him as the first in the Trinidadian legion of the Antillean Union as a hero of that ideal. He was the Antillean par excellence.

The Cuban people offer this marble stone to the distinguished man Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances. In the dark times with fighting in the jungles to obtain their independence and sovereignty, he officially represented us in France's capital. liberator from white colonial slavery. He was born in Cabo Rojo, in April 1827 and died in Paris in Sept. 1898, The Puerto Rican people dedicated this monument to his venerable memory, by popular subscription in 1926.
