Cuando los conquistadores pusieron el pie en la bella isla de Borinquen, los habitantes naturales vivian en tribus diseminadas por varios puntos de la isla, organizadas en una estructura politica, tipo monarquica; con su seberano el Cacique, en esta region de la isla domino el Cacique Canovanax con todas las caracteristicas propias del Indio Taíno; su nobleza, su amor hacia la tierra y la naturaleza.

De este eponimo personaje, nuestro pueblo toma su nombre, haciendo justicia historica a quien de alguna forma contribuyo a añadirle paginas de gloria a su historia.

El pueblo Canóvanas y su gobierno municipal se envuelven en el proposito de perpetuar en la mente y el espiritu de todos, el origen de nuestro nombre.
