Attorney James Madison Nabrit, Jr.

Inscription.
An accomplished lawyer, Nabrit actively participated in seminal civil
rights cases in the 1940s and 1950s. Along with such notables as
Thurgood Marshall he often handled cases for the NAACP Legal Defense
and Educational Fund. He was Marshall's chief assistant in the
Brown v. Topeka Board of Education case. A graduate of Morehouse
College and Northwestern University Law School, he was also an
academician and diplomat. In the 1950s and 60s he served as Dean of
the Howard University Law School, President of Howard University, and
Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations. While at Howard, Nabrit
taught what became recognized as the first formal civil rights course
at any law school. His life spans almost the entire 20th century.
