Overtoom
The Overtoom Channel was built in the 14th century as a connection between the city and the Schinkel, the natural watercourse that was part of the Nieuwe Meer that ran to the IJ Bay via the current Kostverloren Channel. The height differences height between the canal and the Schinkel was bridged with a pick-up or crossover.

Excerpt (in translation): The street owes its name to the overtoom (an over-haul) on a dam that was constructed in 1515 between the Schinkel and the Kostverloren channel. At this busy intersection of water and roads, inns, milk houses, homes, a weekly market and entertainment arose.(Submitted on July 1, 2023.)
