More about this marker. The land for the GAR Woods was acquired by the Cook County Forest Preserve in 1917. The land was dedicated to Civil War Veterans in 1930, soon after the Forest Preserve extended Washington Boulevard west and built a bridge across the Des Plaines River. The forest to the south of Washington Boulevard is named after Thomas Jefferson.
