Welcome to Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Lock 29 Trailhead
Since the 1800s, the Cuyahoga Valley has been a place where people from nearby cities relax in nature. Building on this tradition, locals worked tirelessly to preserve what is now Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Created in 1974, the park protects open countryside, a canal that helped build the nation, and the river that sparked the Clean Water Act.
Lock 29 Trailhead
The Ohio & Erie Canal made Peninsula a busy industrial town and popular overnight stop for canal travelers. The village had boatyards, mills, hotels, taverns, and other businesses. Today visitors can stroll through the historic downtown and stop to shop and dine. Travel 2.3 miles north on the towpath to the historic village of Boston. About a mile south is Deep Lock and connecting trails to old stone quarries.
It is in the valleys that one can realize most effectively a sense of isolation and freedom from the sights and sounds… which go to make the modern city.
Olmsted Brothers, landscape architects who proposed a Cuyahoga Valley park in 1925
