Directly west across the Hudson River stands Weehawken, New Jersey, with Hoboken rising further to the south. The area is largely residential, with Hamilton Park visible as a wide stretch of greenspace on top of the bluffs just to the north. It was below this spot that the famed deadly duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr took place on July 11, 1804. The massive brick towers are the ventilation shafts for the Lincoln tunnel. The tower was designed by Aymar Embury, a prominent New York architect who contributed to the design of many public works projects in the 1930s.

the towers dominate the waterfront landscape.

[Captions:]
The Weehawken Recreation Pier opened in October 2016. The 450-foot pier juts out into the Hudson River, offering excellent views of the New York City skyline. The recreational pier was designed with an innovative "pod" structure, where each pod offers a different activity, including kayaking and fishing.

Dueling was illegal by 1804, but it was still practiced in secrecy. The stretch of flat ground below the bluffs of Weehawken was an attractive spot to New York City duelers because it was difficult to reach by land, reducing the likelihood of unwanted witnesses.

The massive brick towers visible from Pier 76 are the ventilation shafts for the Lincoln Tunnel. Constructed with money from the Depression-era Works Progress Administration, the Moderne-style vent structures conceal fans to move clean air through the one-and-a-half-mile long tunnel.
