Inscription.
Chief Osceola Capture Site. . During the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) in 1837, Osceola and several other representatives from the Seminole Tribe were captured approximately one mile south of Fort Peyton by U.S. Government forces after being lured by the prospect of peace negotiations. General Thomas Sidney Jesup commanded Brigadier General Joseph Hernandez to capture Osceola and all gathered there even though they carried a flag of truce. The U.S. Army marched the captives to St. Augustine and imprisoned them at Fort Marion (the Castillo). After several of the prisoners escaped, Osceola was transferred to Fort Moultrie on South Carolina, where he died of illness in 1838. Although the exact location is unknown, this marker was placed in the general vicinity to memorialize the event.
