Inscription. This beach was designated as the exclusively African American section of beach during the segregation era. The nickname, Chicken Bone Beach, was derived from visitors bringing baskets of fried chicken to the beach. The beach attracted popular black entertainers, local residents and tourists. With the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, all Atlantic City beaches were open to everyone.
