Formerly an endangered species due to poaching, their population has increased thanks to environmental awareness programs at zoos like Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo.
Size: 8 - 19 feet in length
Weight: 400 - 1000 pounds or more
Lifespan: up to 50 years in the wild and up to 85 years in captivity
Diet: insects, frogs, fish, turtles, snakes and mammals
Habitat: swamps, bayous, rivers, lakes, canals, marshes and even golf course ponds
The Florida Everglades is the largest subtropical wetland in the United States, and is home to a variety of animals including several species of wading birds, the Florida Panther and the American Alligator. Today, only 25% of the original everglades remain. The Everglades National Park protects 1.5 million acres, making it the third largest National Park in the country.
