Inscription.
(1689-1763) A series of four conflicts occurred between France and England resulting from disputed claims to territories from the Alleghenies to the Mississippi and around the Great Lakes. British and American troops under British command took part and each side employed Indian allies in the many battles that followed.

In 1754, George Washington led a small body of Colonial troops to drive the French from Western Pennsylvania. They were attacked and defeated by the French and their Indian allies near Fort Duquesne, which later became Pittsburgh. In 1755, English General Braddock led a large force of British troops westward to Fort Duquesne. Unfamiliar with the guerilla type tactics used by the French and Indians and refusing advice from American officers, he was defeated and many of his men were killed. George Washington managed to escape along with a few men.

In 1758, the British started a series of campaigns which conquered all the French forts along the Great Lakes. The final defeat of the French came at Quebec when English forces under General James Wolfe defeated French forces under General Montcalm. However, the struggle continued until 1760 when General Amherst took Montreal.

Under the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763 the French ceded Canada and all their territories east of the Mississippi
