Following his graduation Gutiérrez worked as a physician in Barcelona. He became a member of the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC) in 1959. He was arrested in December 1962 and detained in Burgos prison for eight years. After his release he maintained his activities in secret due to the declaration of a state of emergency in 1969. He was again arrested in October 1973. He was later a member and vice president of the European Parliament.(Submitted on September 9, 2023.)
