When skies are clear, prominent western landmarks dot the horizon, including the sites of other Arkansas State Parks: Mount Magazine, Mount Nebo, and Lake Dardanelle.
As you gaze across the Arkansas River Valley, you are viewing the Magazine Range in the distance. The individual mountains' names in this range have changed over time from unknown names given by American Indian before recorded history to the current names given by European explorers and more recent settlers.
What is now called Mount Nebo was previously named Magasin (barn or storehouse) due to its barn-like shape. Mrs. Louis White gave Mount Nebo its present-day name in the late 1860s. Then the highest summit in the range - as well as the whole range - inherited the name Magazine. Today's Mount Magazine is Arkansas's highest elevation at 2,753 feet above sea level. Both mountains are popular State Park destinations.
Erected by Arkansas State Parks.
