1. Monumental Highway Marker
Inscription. In 1935, the people of Manistee county built this monument, and others on this road, to honor Dr. William Edward Coates, a medical doctor and advocate of health and safety. Dr. Coates practiced medicine from 1903 until his death in 1928 and promoted tuberculosis education, highway improvement, and public sanitation.

The others have just about crumbled into balls of concrete.” ...
