1. Saccharum officinarum Marker

Inscription. This grass has been a source of sugar for at least 5,000 years, and sugar was the original sweetener of choice in the beverage industry. Cane juice, molasses, and falernum syrup are all made from this plant, and are used in the brewing of stouts or fermented and then distilled into rum and Brazilian cachaça.
