1. "Good News" Marker
Inscription. Missionaries were among the first to arrive in the Leech Lake Area and their work had a lasting impact on those who had settled there. Although their primary purpose was to spread the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ, they also served as peacemakers and interpreters. The Jesuits were the first to arrive in the mid 1600s. Europe’s hunger for fur brought many explorers and fur-traders, and missionaries continued to come to our area for the next two hundred years! They were instrumental in obtaining peace treaties between the Ojibwe and Dakota tribes, along with the English, French, Swedish, German and Norwegian immigrants who had settled in the area that later became known as Walker, Minnesota and established churches in languages respective to their individual nationalities.

"How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

Donated by the family of Reverend C.F.W. Walther

Erected 2015 by The City of Walker, Minnesota.
