Inscription. In the early 1900s before the automobile, tourists could book round-trip railroad passage from Minneapolis to Walker for just fifty cents! At its peak in the 1970s, there were over 200 Ma & Pa establishments serving the lake — mostly simply fish camps. As word spread of its breath-taking views and fish-laden waters, more and more folks arrived and the typical resort became more family oriented. They needed a place to get a boat, possibly a guide and after an enjoyable day out on the lake, they would eat a good meal and find a welcome place to lay their heads. Therefore, the “fish-camp” was replaced with modern, up-to-date facilities to accommodate their every desire. The many resorts around the lakes in the northern part of Cass County all cater to the entire family with entertaining pastimes for all ages. Soon, many year-round homes sprouted up and around the many lakes and businesses in the area and communities around these lakes thrived to a booming Tourist industry.
