2401 E. Clay Street. c. 1890. This brick Italianate two-story house was built c. 1890. The three-bay house features a double front entrance. The full-width front porch displays Victorian Eastlake details with ornamental brackets, dentils and a french curl ceiling. The brickwork is accented by soldier brick below the cornice and above the windows. Fred Welty, a builder, purchased the lot in 1888 for $350.00 and built the house as a rental property. In 1892, the first occupant of the house was Ms. Rosa M. deDutzele, a high school teacher. James Blair, the manager of Blair Pharmacy, resided here in 1895. In 1897 a railroad brakeman, James W. Boston, rented the house. Mr. Welty sold the house in 1906 to Francis Collier for $2600. This house is listed as a contributing structure to the Church Hill North Historic District on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
