Inscription.
"War Between the States,
Brother Against Brother"

The civil war officially began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate forces bombarded the Union controlled Fort Sumter.

Delaware was a Border State
There were many causes of the Civil War, including differences about the idea of slavery, as well as trade, tariffs, and states' rights. Delaware sided with the North and did not secede from the Union. Unlike their neighbors to the north, however, the practice of slavery was legal and most likely existed for industrial and large farm settings, particularly in the southern part of the state. This meant that Delaware was not named in the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 which outlawed slavery in the Confederate south. Delaware Slaves were not officially freed until the war was over.
