The Visigothic and Medieval Cemeteries
The amphitheatre was turned into a holy site by the Christians in the 3rd century AD as it was here that Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons, Augurius and Eulogius, were martyred in 259 AD. A cemetery with different types of graves grew up around the 6th century Visigothic basilica.

This use was perpetuated in the mediaeval period with the interior of the Romanesque church also being used as a place of burial.
