Inscription.
Trout, which are less plentiful on Long Island than bass, have an almost cult-like following of anglers who are infatuated with studying the fish as they are with actually catching them.

Unlike bass, which can survive under conditions that would kill other species, trout need clean, clear, cool water to thrive, making them relatively uncommon here. The lakes created by the damming of Mill River are murky and shallow, so they warm up quickly in hot spells.

South Pond is the only Hempstead lake with trout. It also has bass, carp, bluegills, and other warm-water species, and is a bit deeper than most, and is easy to fish from the shore. The trout in South Pond are the three most commonly found in eastern waters: rainbow, brown, and brook. Although trout were said to be plentiful in upper Mill River until its waters were slowed centuries ago by mill dams, South Pond only has this game fish because the state stocks them there.
