Onderwijzeres en gouvernante in voormalig Nederlands-Indië. Hier trouwde ze met Henri van Kol en begon ze met schrijven. In het Soerabaijasch Handelsblad gaf ze in Brieven aan Minette haar kijk op opvoeding, de positie van de vrouw en de koloniale samenleving. Ze was oprichtster van het socialistische maandblad De Vrouw, waarin ze haar vooruitstrevende ideeën over onder andere emancipatie uitdroeg, en het tijdschrift Ons Blaadje voor arbeiderskinderen. Onder de naam Volkskinderbibliotheek van Nellie verschenen door haar vertaalde en bewerkte sprookjes, mythen en sagen en bijbelverhalen. Van Kol recenseerde ook kinderboeken en startte rond 1900 de discussie over de eisen waaraan kinderboeken zouden moeten voldoen. Voor haar was een boek een middel in de zedelijke opvoeding, vooral bedoeld om kinderen iets te leren.

In the Soerabaijasch Handelsblad (“Surabaya Commercial Paper”) she gave her view on education, the position of women and colonial society in Letters to Minette. She was the founder of the socialist monthly magazine De Vrouw (“The Woman”), in which she promoted her progressive ideas, about emancipation, among other things, and the magazine Ons Blaadje (“Our Little Paper”) for working-class children. She published translated and edited fairy tales, myths and legends, and Bible stories under Volkskinderbibliotheek van Nellie (“Nellie’s Popular Children’s Library). Van Kol also reviewed children's books and started the discussion around 1900 about the requirements that children's books should meet. For her, a book was a tool for moral education, primarily intended to teach children something.
