The Curaçaoan 'Tata' de Lannoy-Willems fought for women's suffrage. During the elections of March 17, 1949, in which women were allowed to vote for the first time, the Nationale Volkspartij (“National People's Party”) became the largest. De Lannoy-Willems therefore became the first female member of parliament of the new Estates of the Netherlands Antilles. She was good at weighing her answers in discussions and could calmly answer something negative in a positive way, without offending. She responded to a caricature of her naked on a donkey with the comment that that was fine, "because that's how my mother gave birth to me." In 1992, a Netherlands Antillean postage stamp with her portrait appeared in the 'Famous Persons' series.
