Key West in Monroe County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center
-Circa 1955-
Inscription.
This is the only community pool open to the public in Key West. The pool and community center were built during segregation for the residents of black town. It was renamed for Martin Luther King Jr, the leader of the American Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his death in 1968. His legacy and this pool embody much of the segregation trails, tribulations, and eventual triumphs that took place in the 1960s and 1970s.
