Paleo Indian Period 15000 B.C.E. - 8000 B.C.E.
The word Paleo means "ancient or pre-historic." Archaeologists generally agree that Paleo Indians came to North America around 17000 years ago by crossing a land bridge connecting Siberia with Alaska. They lived in small nomadic groups of about 20-40 people and followed animal herds around water sources, eventually arriving in Georgia.

In 1935, archaeologists discovered a Clovis projectile point west of the Earth Lodge. They uncovered the projectile point from a prehistoric fire pit and removed the charcoal remains for cataloging. When carbon-14 dating was introduced, the charcoal was processed and dated to 8000 B.C.E. This Clovis point was the first one found east of the Mississippi River, and provided evidence of early occupation in the Eastern United States.

Paleo Indians used spears to hunt large Ice Age mammals such as Columbia mammoths, giant sloths, and saber-tooth tigers. The Clovis point was in use for about 600 years, being replaced with smaller points as the larger mammals died off. Quad, Beaver Lake, Suwannee and Dalton points, are some of the points manufactured to hunt smaller game such as deer, rabbit, bear, and turkey, near the end of the Paleo Period.
