Inscription.

In November 1882, Harriet Walker, a civic leader and health care advocate, summoned 44 women to lay plans for what would become Northwestern Hospital for Women and Children. It opened in a rented house at 2504 Fourth Avenue South, with the goal of caring for indigent women and children and training nurses. In the hospital's first year, it served 97 patients, 74 of whom were treated at no cost. In 1887, Walker and her all-female staff dedicated the first structure built specifically for hospital use at the corner of Chicago Avenue and 27th Street, on land donated by local businessman Levi Stewart. After several mergers, including with Abbott Hospital, Eitel Hospital, and the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, what started as Northwestern Hospital in 1882 became Abbott Northwestern Hospital in 1980.
