Oaks by the Bay Park
— Panama City, Florida —
In this park are the remains of a Native American settlement occupied sometime between AD 1200 and 1500. Archaeological studies at this site, called the Buena Vista Site 8BY878 documented that this was probably a small, temporary settlement where people gathered and prepared seafood, especially fish and shellfish. The culture of the Indians who lived here is called Fort Walton, and it is identified mainly by their distinctive pottery which is abundant on their settlements. The people who fished here were probably part of a large. community and lived permanently in a large village in the St. Andrews area. The archaeological studies were performed by the University of West Florida under the direction of Dr. Judith A. Bengc and was sponsored by the City of Panama City
Erected by City of Panama City.
