The Farr Cottage

The Farr Cottage. . This Regency-style cottage was built circa 1840. The original building was almost square in plan, and the interior wooden flooring suggests that it had a small front living room, two bedrooms and a kitchen/work area. The exterior featured a hipped roof adorned with a wooden fretwork fascia, tall windows and a front door framed with sidelights. Over the years, additions connected the cottage to its root cellar., Salmon B. Farr, a tailor, was one of the first owners of the property. The cottage has served as the home and workplace for a shoemaker, doctors, a beekeeper, a barber, two potters and artisans., Two owners made significant contributions to the area. Arriving in 1903, Dr. Arthur H. Addy served the Jordan area for 44 years. He delivered more than 3,000 babies, and with his buggy and three horses - and later with his automobile - covered countless miles making house calls. In the early days, Dr. Addy received requests for home visits via the telephone located at the Snure General Store. In the cottage, he operated a medical dispensary and mixed his own ingredients. He was paid in cash or in farm produce such as eggs, butter, potatoes or a load of hay., Tessa Kidick operated the 'Emporium of Pottery' in the cottage from 1955-1992. Prior to this, Ms. Kidick had served with the Women's Royal Naval Service as a telegraph operator during The Second World War. After the war, she was one of five women who attended the Ontario College of Art (OCA). She specialized in stoneware pottery, and by the time she had purchased the cottage, she was an internationally-renowned potter. While teaching at OCA, Ms. Kidick played a major role in the rebirth of indigenous pottery by assisting Elda 'Bun' Smith, who revived pottery-making on the Six Nations Reserve of the Grand River., Heritage Lincoln , Lincoln Archives , Lincoln Public Library and Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre ,
