These anchors sank with the ships Atocha and Santa Margarita in 1622. Each anchor weighs approximately 2,200 lbs. For almost 400 years, they lay on the ocean floor. The iron in the anchors survived, but the wood did not. The wooden stocks were refitted for this display.
These anchors were raised and lowered by hand, using a capstan similar to this image.
