Alexander C. McMurtry's gravesite is a few steps away from the Washington Post's memorial. According to the gravestone, McMurtry was born in Belfast, Ireland, and served as a captain with the Company H of the 88th Illinois infantry during the Civil War. The 88th was organized in Chicago in 1862 and known as the "Second Board of Trade Regiment"; McMurtry was originally assigned to Company D when he joined that August, and would join Company H in 1864. McMurtry and the 88th would participate in a number of major engagements in the Western Theater from 1862 until 1865, including Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Atlanta and Nashville. He lived on Chicago's north side after the war and was a salesman.
