Bad Humored Island
"Four Indians, two chiefs and two principle men joined us. We proceeded on about one mile (up river from the mouth of the Teton (Bad) River) and anchored off the shore of a willow island. Placed a guard on shore to protect the cooks and a guard in the boat, fastened the pirogues to the boat. I call this Bad Humored Island, as we were in a bad humor." —Paraphrased from Clark

Lewis and Clark used dead reckoning, a method of measuring travel using a compass for direction and measuring distances based on an individuals average pace count on land or on the average speed of a boat.

Perils Along The Way
There were many perils along the way for the Corps of Discovery. Shifting currants, sand bars and snags all created dangers for the men while in the water. On shore, the dangers were also very prevalent. This excerpt from Gass on September 20, 1804 explains just one of them.

"At 1 o'clock at night, the bank where we were stationed began to fall so much that we were obliged to rouse all hands, and go on a mile and cross the river before we could again encamp."
