1. Private Jacob Hess Marker
Inscription. Jacob Hess (1766-1823) served as a Private in Captain Charles Depew's company of the 5th Regiment Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. His brothers Samuel and Peter, and his son-in-law David Almas, Sr. also served in the same unit. Jacob's parents, Michael (1740-1804) and Charity (1744-1808) Hess, both buried in this cemetery, moved their family from Pennsylvania in 1789 to escape persecution, one of the first families to settle on Hamilton Mountain. Jacob married Elizabeth Horning before 1795 and they had nine children.

When Jacob died in 1823 he was buried next to his parents in a small cemetery on the property of one of their neighbours, Henry Smith. Because of the prominence of the Hess's headstones, the cemetery was called The Hess Cemetery. Since the 1960s this cemetery has been cared for by the Diocese of Niagara, Anglican Church of Canada.
