1. The Canal after the Flood Marker
Inscription.
In 1925, the Miami Erie Canal was officially abandoned for transportation purposes. Portions of the canal remained in use until 1940 for hydraulic power generation. Plans to fill much of the canal to make way for the Miami Canal Parkway came soon after the canal was abandoned. By 1927, the state of Ohio had passed legislation authorizing the purchase of all properties required for the construction of the road. The filling of the canal began in 1928. Existing, unfilled segments of the canal had taken on the appearance of open sewers as they waited to be built upon. The parkway, which was eventually named Patterson Boulevard for John Patterson, founder of the National Cash Register Company and Dayton benefactor, opened in 1938.

Remains of the Miami Erie Canal, looking north to Fourth Street from the vicinity of Fifth Street about 1930. The canal had become a garbage dump, appearing to be more of an open sewer than a waterway. The photograph depicts the present day Patterson Commons area of Dayton. To the right is the Sachs-Prudens Brewing Company building.
