Inscription.
Best known as the founder of the National Cash Register Company, John H. Patterson was a grandson of Robert Patterson, an early Dayton settler and a strong supporter for the construction of the Miami Erie Canal. John Patterson's association with the canal ran deep. During the period 1867-1876, he was a Miami Erie Canal toll collector with a toll booth at Third and Kenton Streets. At the time, Patterson saw the canal going into disrepair as tolls fell due to competition from the railroad. When the National Cash Register Company flourished, Patterson led important civic improvement efforts in Dayton. During the early 1900s, he became a strong advocate for the abandonment of the poorly maintained Miami Erie Canal. When the parkway was completed in 1938, it was aptly named for the benefactor who had contributed much to Dayton, its industrial growth, and its civic improvement.
