Member of the United States Congress - 1962-1990.
First African-American member of the United States Congress elected from a district west of the Mississippi River.
Graduate of Jefferson High School (1926) and UCLA (1931).
Co-author of the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act (with Senator Hubert H. Humphrey - 1978).
Congressman Hawkins was known for his defense of civil rights and labor issues.
