Lake Sturgeon are the largest fish in the Great Lakes Region. They live to be over 100 years old. Fossil evidence shows that they have been around since before the dinosaurs.

Native Americans fished for Sturgeon for generations.

However, early white settlers considered Sturgeon a nuisance because they tangled and destroyed fishing nets. They were often caught, killed, left to rot, or used as steamship fuel.

Later settlers discovered that sturgeon were a great source of meat and caviar. Between 1879 and 1900, the Great Lakes commercial sturgeon fishery brought in an average of 4 million pounds (1.8 metric tons) per year.

Due to a slow reproductive cycle they soon started to disappear. Because of recent stocking and conservation laws Lake Sturgeon have started to make a comeback. One of their spawning sites is right here in Ogdensburg.
