United We Stand
"Women had more to offer the union than their adoring support."
Melinda Chateauvert, historian
Wives of porters were indispensable to the union movement. While their husbands could be disciplined or fired for undertaking efforts to organize, the women were free to recruit members and spread the message. Their grassroots activism paid off. The women viewed the union as a collective possession, for themselves and their men; it became the catalyst for social change.
Erected 2017.
