1. Ulysses S. Grant Sycamore Marker

Inscription. Ulysses S. Grant, born April 27, 1822, at Point Pleasant, Ohio, gained recognition as General of the Union Army during the Civil War and became the 18th president of the United States. The Ulysses S. Grant Sycamore shaded Grant's headquarters near City Point, now Hopewell, Virginia, during the nine-month siege of the South's vital railroad center of Petersburg.

The sycamore's trunk grows to be the largest diameter of any eastern hardwood - up to 15 feet - with a proclivity towards heart rot creating cave-like openings near the base. Early Ohio history tells of the Scioto sycamore that protected 13 men on horseback one stormy night, with room to spare!
