Amsterdam Post Office Murals
The historic post office building in Amsterdam contains two murals painted by Henry Schnakenberg in 1939 as part of the New Deal Treasury Section of Fine Arts program. The murals were painted three years after the post office was built as a Depression-era public works project, designed by Treasury architect Louis Simony in the Colonial revival style. In one mural pictured top right colonist Sir William Johnson is shown holding a meeting with Iroquois chiefs. The second mural pictured center right, shows life on the Erie Canal in the 1840s when the community of Port Jackson was a canal stop. Port Jackson ultimately became the South Side of the city of Amsterdam
Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook
Spanning 511 feet between the north and south i banks of the Mohawk River, the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook uniquely combines a bridge with a park-like setting, while introducing vistors to the cultural history of the Mohawk Valley. The bridge, located 200 yards north of here along Bridge Street is curved to harmonize with the natural forms of the river and valley. The textured, colored pavement reflects not only the swirls and eddies of the river, but also of history. Twelve stopping points along the bridge are marked with icons and interpretive panels highlighting the history of Amsterdam and the Mohawk Valley.
