1. William Ellery Channing House Marker

Inscription. Home of Rev. William Ellery Channing, abolitionist and founder of the Unitarian Church and Charity "Duchess" Quamino, an enslaved African-born woman who served as his nanny and cook. Duchess became famous for her culinary skills, and by 1782, she had made enough money to purchase her own home, using the oven of the Channing house for large baking projects.
