Inscription. This magnolia tree was dedicated at Reunion 2000 by the Black Alumni of Notre Dame as a cancer survivor tree. It was rededicated at Reunion 2009 after the ribbon-shaped brick walkway was added to enhance its presence. As it grows and blossoms each year, the magnolia represents renewal of life and commemorates survivorship.

For her leadership on this initiative, the University is grateful to Dr. Eleanor M. Walker, a radiation oncologist recognized for her dedication to patient advocacy and quality of life whose work was inspired by her mother's wisdom: "Always treat your patients as if they were a family member."

You are invited to tie a ribbon from this display on the tree to commemorate your own survival or that of a loved one.
